The God Who Sees

Genesis 16:13
Then she called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, You-Are-The-God Who-Sees; for she said, “Have I also here seen Him who sees me?” (NKJV)

Alone, angry and afraid the young Egyptian woman sat near the spring in the desert. The abuse had been too much. Not only had her husband simply used her for his own purpose and pleasure, but he failed to stand up for her when the other woman came against her and mistreated her, even though the young woman was carrying his child. It made no sense. These were people of God, yet their harsh words and unbearable treatment made Hagar run from their presence.

While she escaped from Abram and Sarai, Hagar did not escape “El-Roi”, the God Who Sees. In her darkest hour, God saw her need and heard her affliction. He knew right where she was, and He knew what she had been through. He came to Hagar, comforted her, gave her direction for survival, and spoke to her His promise of blessing.

My friend, whatever pain you carry or problem you endure, please know that El-Roi, the God who sees, is there for you. He sees every tear; He hears every cry. He longs to heal your hurts.

Kay Arthur in her wonderful book, Lord, I Want to Know You writes this, “Whether the abuse is sexual, mental, or physical, can there be healing? Yes, healing has to be possible. Otherwise, a sovereign God of love would surely have intervened. Where does healing begin? With the recognition of El Roi, the God who sees. He was awake. He saw it all . . . Therefore, as horrible and as destructive as it seems, in God’s economy, it will be used for good. You must know Him, believe Him, and put your trust in His name, for He does not forsake those who seek Him (Psalm 9:10)”

Gracious Father, knowing that You see clearly and completely every moment of my life calms my fears and eases my heartaches. Help me always to run to the strong tower of Your name and find peace.
