God's Consistency Amidst the Changing World
Malachi 3:6
For I am the Lord, I do not change.
Hebrews 13:8
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
Autumn was always my mother's favorite time of year. She was thrilled just being able to watch the leaves turn from their brilliant greens into the golds, oranges and reds. Something about it was always very special to her. I know many people have that special likeness for fall. It is a wonderful time of year because we see so vividly the changes in creation around us. If you take a good look, you will notice that is happening right now, right outside your window.
But you know, everything in our world seems to be changing - always has and always will. Political leaders change, governments change, things come and go. Clothing styles change. Think what they were when you were younger and how they are now. Of course, we see some of those trends repeated. Foods have a way of running in trends as well. Our relationships change. Our bodies change - that is one we do not like to think about.
Trends of all kinds seem to change. I think of what the kids are looking at right now. Last year it was the Furbie. A few months ago it was the Beanie Babies. And at this moment, it's Pokemon.
In the midst of our ever-changing world, it is a real comfort to me to know that we have a never-changing God. Malachi 3:6 says, "For I am the Lord, I do not change." Is that not a neat thought? Even though everything around us seems to change, even the very earth itself shifts in different places at times, but God says, "I never change." The word He used for "Lord" there was "Jehovah." "I am Jehovah. I am God. I am the One who has all you need. I never change."
In the New Testament we find another verse that speaks of the Lord Jesus. Hebrews 13:8 says, "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever." God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit are never changing. Even in the midst of our ever-changing world we serve a never-changing God. His love never changes. His mercy never changes. His goodness never changes. His ability to provide and meet needs never changes. His holiness, His justice, we could go on and on.
Next time you get discouraged, stop and think for a moment. No matter what else changes around you, God in all His greatness and might and majesty will never change. In an ever-changing world, He is a never-changing God.
