Were You There? Part 2

MARK 16:6 and 8 (NKJV)
You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is risen! He is not here . . . So they went out quickly and fled from the tomb, for they trembled and were amazed.

The old spiritual, WERE YOU THERE? is a part of many traditional Easter celebrations. The first three stanzas center on the crucifixion of Christ by asking:

Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?
Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?

Thankfully the song doesn’t end there. The fourth stanza shifts the focus from the horror of the crucifixion of the innocent Lamb of God who became the payment for our sin, to the glorious resurrection morning when the ladies who came to the tomb heard the angel say, “He is risen!”

Were you there when God raised him from the tomb?
Were you there when God raised him from the tomb?
Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when God raised him from the tomb?

If we lived only in the shadow of the death of Christ, we would live in defeat and sorrow, but the death of Christ is not the end of the story—rather it is the beginning! His resurrection from the dead brings us new power, a living hope, and a reason to be joyful every day.

While our Easter celebration ended last week, the reality of the living Christ goes on forever! By placing our faith and trust in Him for our salvation, we can have a daily relationship and sweet fellowship with the living, loving Lord Jesus Christ. “Hallelujah! What a Savior!”

PRAYER: Thank You, Lord, for giving me a reason to celebrate every day!

WORDS TO PONDER:
“He lives, He lives, Christ Jesus lives today!
He walks with me and talks with me along life’s narrow way.
He lives, He lives, salvation to impart!
You ask me how I know He lives? He lives within my heart.”
