A Light for My Path Devotional

Obedience Brings Victory

JOHN 14:19-21 (NKJV)
A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me. Because I live, you will live also. At that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you. He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me, and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him. (NKJV)

Easter is almost here! At this special time of year, our thoughts turn to the Lord Jesus Christ, His last days here on earth, and to His death, burial, and resurrection. What a wonderful example of trust and obedience Christ gave us! Because He loved and trusted the Father, Christ willingly gave up His life to fulfill the Father’s plan. Our Lord was confident that His obedience would be met by victory. And indeed victory over sin and death was won when on the third day after His death when Christ arose from the grave. His sacrifice was accepted by the Father and the debt for our sin was paid!

Shortly before His death, Christ spoke to His disciples saying. “A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me. Because I live, you will live also. At that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you. He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me, and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him,” (John 14:19-21).

He gave this promise to assure His followers that although there would come a time when He would be parted from them, they would one day live together again. They didn’t understand what their Master meant by this. They didn’t understand when He told them He would die. They didn’t understand when He told them His body would be resurrected three days later. Still they believed that He was the Messiah, the beloved Son of God. Because they believed, and loved, and trusted Him, they obeyed Him–and their obedience resulted in victory for the rest of their lives.

If we love, trust, and obey the Lord Jesus, even when we don’t fully understand all that is happening, we, too, will live in victory and in the power of His Holy Spirit. Because Jesus lives, we now live in this present life showered with His love and blessing, but our victory doesn’t end there! We have the blessed hope of spending eternity in Heaven with Him. Now that is truly victory!

PRAYER: Blessed Redeemer, Your obedience gave me life. May my life give obedience to You.

WORDS TO PONDER: “Living for Jesus who died in my place, bearing on Calvary my sin and disgrace;
Such love constrains me to answer His call, follow his leading and give Him my all.”
