A Light for My Path Devotional

Mary Listened

LUKE 1:28 (NKJV)
And having come in, the angel said to [Mary], “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!

God promised His people a Savior to deliver them from the bondage of sin and despair to a kingdom of righteousness and peace. Those who loved and followed Him knew His plan well. For centuries, they listened to the prophets proclaim His promises, and followed His plan as they worshipped and praised Him. Living with the promises, performing the ordinances, and waiting for the Savior were a part of everyday life for God’s people.

No wonder when the angel appeared to a young virgin in Nazareth, Mary listened as he announced that she had found favor with God; she was chosen to be the mother of the long-awaited Savior. Though mystified as to how it would all come to pass, because of her faith in the promises of God, she humbly submitted and surrendered to His plan.

Mary listened a few days later when her cousin Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, blessed Mary and the child within her. The words affirmed for the young woman that the message of the angel was true. Then, Mary’s heart so stirred that she burst forth in a song of rejoicing and praise to the God who had chosen her and remembered His people.

Mary and Joseph listened when Caesar Augustus decreed that the people of his land must register in the place of their birth. In compliance, they traveled to the city of Bethlehem, fulfilling the prophecy that the Christ would be born in that very town.

As a band of lowly shepherds arrived at the stable to see her newborn son, Mary listened to the message the angel had delivered to the men. “Glory to God in the highest! Peace on earth, goodwill to men! Christ the Savior is born!” She pondered these words in her heart.

Surely Mary listened in amazement when, on the eighth day of her son’s life, she heard the words of old Simeon in the temple. This one so filled with the Spirit rejoiced that Jesus was the Light sent from God to deliver His people. Then just moments later, Mary listened as the prophetess Anna declared the baby to be the Redemption of Israel.

Over and over again we see that Mary listened. Her heart was constantly open to hear the word of the Lord as He spoke to her through His messengers. She never refused it, rejected it, or ran from it. She humbly accepted it, believed it, pondered it, and rejoiced in it. No wonder Mary found favor with God!

PRAYER: Lord, help me have a heart like Mary’s—one that is always listening to hear when You speak, and wise enough to obey.
