And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.

We live in a busy world where people are often so focused on what they have to do and their own circumstances that they forget to reach out to others in need. Here’s a story to warm your heart and remind us all of the importance of simple kindness.

One day, a poor boy who was selling goods from door to door to pay his way through school found he had only one thin dime left, and he was hungry.

He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door.

Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water! She thought he looked hungry so brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it so slowly, and then asked, “How much do I owe you?”

“You don’t owe me anything,” she replied. “Mother taught us never to accept pay for a kindness.”

He said, “Then I thank you from my heart.”

As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but his faith in God and man was strong also. He had been ready to give up and quit.

Many years later that same young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city where they called in specialists to study her rare disease.

Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately he rose and went down the hall of the hospital to her room.

Dressed in his doctor’s coat he went in to see her. He recognized her at once.

He went back to the consultation room determined to do his best to save her life. From that day he gave special attention to her case. After a long struggle, the battle was won.

Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it then wrote something on the edge and the bill was sent to her room. She feared to open it, for she was sure it would take the rest of her life to pay for it all. Finally she looked, and something caught her attention on the side of the bill. She read these words . . .

“Paid in full with one glass of milk,” signed, Dr. Howard Kelly.

Tears of joy flooded her eyes as her happy heart prayed, “Thank You, God, that Your love has spread through human hearts and hands.”

There’s a saying which goes something like this: Bread cast on the waters comes back to you. The good deed you do today may benefit you or someone you love at the least expected time. If you never see the deed again at least you will have made the world a better place – and, after all, isn’t that what life is all about?

–Original author of this story is unknow

Lord, please remind me each day that little kindnesses can make a big difference.

JOHN 13:35 (KJV)
By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

When we arrived, a thin, old man with a scruffy beard and a gentle-looking lady sat comfortably talking on the bench just outside the inn where we were staying for the weekend. Their conversation was relaxed and easy; it was obvious they were old friends. At the other end of the parking lot another group of people chatted quietly. And when we made our way toward our room, the hall was literally lined with people obviously waiting for others to join them. The ambiance was amazing. Later we discovered that we were the only strangers in the mix—all the rest of these folks were in town for a family reunion.

What a family this was! There was joy and laughter, good clean conversation, and lots and lots of love, even though it looked as if some of them had seen their share of troubles.

The next evening while looking for a cup of coffee, I accidentally walked in on the family preparing for supper. I apologized for interrupting their get- together, and a friendly voice called out, “Oh, we’re just having family-reunion leftovers for dinner.”

“That sounds good!” I replied as I started out the door.

“Well, come on in and eat with us. Come join the family!”

I politely declined the offer, but I honestly believe they would have welcomed me at their table, and I would have been blessed to be among them.

Dear Christian, when was the last time you were that warm and welcoming and inviting to someone outside of the family of God? As children of the King, we have unlimited blessings to offer and eternity to share with the world around us.

Heavenly Father, help us as Your children to let the warmth of family love be evident to those who do not know You. Remind us to be faithful in inviting others to come join the family.

Now unto Him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy, to the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever.

I’ve just returned from a wonderful vacation in the Midwest, and as I reflect on all that transpired from the time we pulled out of the driveway in Pennsylvania until we returned nine days later, I’m amazed at the multitude of blessings our loving Heavenly Father showered upon us. Safe travel, perfect weather, wonderful time with family and friends, worshiping with other believers and hearing from God’s Word, time to relax and be refreshed—the list is long and I truly praise God for each of these gifts.

One of my favorite hymns is TO GOD BE THE GLORY. It’s an old song written by Fanny Crosby, but it’s something I can sing and meditate on every single day, because it reminds me that all of my blessings come because of God’s goodness and His graciousness to me as His child. What an incredible gift it is to receive His gift of life and pardon from sin through the Lord Jesus Christ and belong to Him and daily walk with Him. Please take a moment to read through this hymn and soak in the words. May it become your daily meditation.

To God be the glory great things He hath done!
So loved He the world that He gave us His Son,
Who yielded His life an atonement for sin,
And opened the life gate that all may go in.

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the earth hear His voice!
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the people rejoice!
O come to the Father thru Jesus the Son,
And give Him the glory – great things He hath done!

O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood,
To every believer the promise of God;
The vilest offender who truly believes,
That moment from Jesus a pardon receives.

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the earth hear His voice!
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the people rejoice!
O come to the Father thru Jesus the Son,
And give Him the glory – great things He hath done!

Great things He hath taught us, great things He hath done,
And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son;
But purer and higher, and greater will be
Our wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see.

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the earth hear His voice!
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the people rejoice!
O come to the Father thru Jesus the Son,
And give Him the glory – great things He hath done!

Glorious Lord, I thank You for the gift of redemption through Jesus Christ my Lord. May I always remember to praise and thank You for the bountiful blessings You send to me each day.

JOSHUA 24:24
And the people said to Joshua, “The LORD our God we will serve, and His voice we will obey.”

You’d think they would have been complaining or clamoring to get free. It wasn’t fair! After all, they were two men of God, doing His work, preaching good news, and promoting peace, and then they were thrown in jail! But instead of complaining and clamoring Paul and Silas were singing hymns to God and praying. There in the midnight hour of the darkest days of their lives, through their songs they spoke of God, and with their prayers they spoke to God.

Those around couldn’t help hearing the commotion, and it was abundantly clear to the other prisoners and the guards that these men had not a speck of self-pity, nor a sliver of sorrow, and not one ounce of regret about what was going on in their lives. Why? Because they knew they were right where God wanted them to be. Paul and Silas obeyed all that God directed them to do, and they trusted Him to be faithful to carry out His plan in them, through them, and for them.

Paul and Silas knew the secret of overcoming anxiety and fear. They made the choice to serve God and obey His commands, but their obedience wasn’t truly the foundation of their faith in God. It was His faithfulness to them as time and time again they witnessed God’s hand at work in their lives and in their ministry. They saw Him meet their needs, provide direction for their journey, and they felt His never-leaving presence. It was knowing that He could be trusted to give them all they needed for their every need. You can read their story in Acts 16. It’s a story of obedient men and a very faithful God.

Faithful Father, Your word is a great reminder of Your faithfulness to work in the lives of those who love and obey you. Help us, Lord, to be aware of Your current work in our lives so that we may have confidence and boldness in You.

Choose you this day whom ye will serve . . . as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

In America, every year July 4th brings with it festivities, fun, food, family and friends, and fireworks—all as a celebration of national freedom. But even with all the celebrating and fun, many Americans are still caught in the web of bondage on a mental, emotional, relational, financial, vocational or spiritual level. Most often, we ourselves create the chains that bind us by making poor or sinful choices.

The longer I live, the more convinced I am that life is a series of choices, each choice has a consequence, and we must live with the consequences of our choices. In order to have true freedom in your life, then, you must make wise choices.

Will you choose good over evil (Psalm 34:14; Romans 12:21)? Obedience over rebellion (Proverbs 10:8; Hebrews 13:17)? Truth over deceit (Colossians 3:9; Proverbs 12:22)? Kindness over dishonor (Ephesians 4:32; Proverbs 14:2)? Every day you make hundreds of choices and these form the basis for your lifestyle.

Seek God’s wisdom in all of your decisions, not the wisdom of the world, the flesh or the devil (James 3:17). Take the sometimes difficult step of saying, “I’ll do it God’s way!” even though it may mean avoiding the easy road. In the long run, the freedom that comes with making godly choices is definitely something to celebrate!

Lord, we lift to You our praise and adoration for the blessings You give us each day as we choose to walk Your way.

JOHN 11:41
Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.”

It was just one of those days when I was dragging. Heat and humidity? Physical exhaustion? Stress? I’m not sure what brought it on, but my energy level was low. Two of my co-workers greeted me when I arrived at the office and we chatted a moment, then I plopped into a chair and said, “I think you’re going to have to wind me up to get me going this morning.”

Jane, our administrative assistant, smiled and said, “Rather than wind you up, I’d like to lift you up.” And she did. She prayed lifting my need before our Heavenly Father, asking Him to be my strength and hope that day. Our staff prays together every day before we begin our work, so this was nothing unusual, but I can’t tell you how refreshing and encouraging it was on that particular day.

Lifting up someone always starts with an upward look, moving our eyes from our circumstances and surroundings to our loving Heavenly Father, recognizing that He alone has all we need for every need. Psalm 121:1 gives us a great picture of this:

“I will lift up my eyes to the hills—
From whence comes my help?
My help comes from the LORD,
Who made heaven and earth.”

When was the last time you helped a friend by lifting him/her to the Lord in prayer, praying for specific needs and trusting God to truly meet those needs? That’s a great gift to give a friend, but the other half of that blessing is to let your friend know you are standing beside him/her. Send a card, email, text or verbal word just to say, “Friend, I’m lifting you up!”

Heavenly Father, You have blessed me abundantly with friends who care. Thank You for the privilege of helping one another as we fix our gaze on You.

HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!

EPHESIANS 5:8-10
For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.

I was a few minutes early for the workshop and by sitting near the front of the room, I could easily see the presenter organizing her papers, setting up the Power Point materials, and readying herself for her talk. Then just a few moments before the class began, an attractive young woman entered the room, walked straight to the teacher, and looked her in the eye. The visitor affirmed the presenter with some kind words, and brushed a wisp of stray hair away from her face. The smile on the leader’s face showed relief and renewed confidence. As quickly as she came, the visitor was gone.

Just a few seconds later, a second lovely young woman entered the room and repeated nearly the same actions as the first. This one was even more bold in her gestures and words. These visitors were obviously cheerleaders for our teacher, and the connection between them was strong and affective.

Later I learned that these three ladies are sisters—all daughters of a renowned man of God whose writings and teachings focus on living in the wonder and truth of God’s Word. He and his wife have spent their lives encouraging and preparing others for ministry, and helping them build strong families. From what I saw that day of the connection between his daughters, he obviously practiced at home what he preached to others. That kind of relationship comes only from knowing and spending time with one another. The daughters are truly a reflection of their father as they walk in the light of his example, his counsel, and his love.

The apostle Paul reminds us that as believers we have a responsibility to be a reflection of the goodness, righteousness and truth of our Heavenly Father, and we walk in the light of His example, His counsel, and His love.

Blessed Father, remind me of the importance of spending time with You and knowing You more each day so that I may reflect Your light to others.

ISAIAH 41:10
Fear not, for I am with you;
Be not dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you,
Yes, I will help you,
I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.

The winds of adversity blow viscously in our lives at times turning everything upside down. At other times the storm may not rage so violently, but there is still a steady weathering that occurs with day-to-day frustrations, heartaches, and difficulties. Both take their toll on us, and we need a measure of extra strength. The little story below reminds us where we can find that.

“Every time I am asked to pray, I think of the old fellow who always prayed, ‘Lord, prop us up on our leaning side.’ After hearing him pray that prayer many times, someone asked him why he prayed that prayer so fervently.

“He answered, ‘Well sir, you see, it’s like this . . . I got an old barn out back. It’s been there a long time. It’s withstood a lot of weather, it’s gone through a lot of storms, and it’s stood for many years. It’s still standing. But one day I noticed it was leaning to one side a bit. So I went and got some pine poles and propped it up on its leaning side so it wouldn’t fall.

“Then I got to thinking about how much I was like that old barn. I’ve been around a long time. I’ve withstood a lot of life’s storms, and I’ve withstood a lot of bad weather in life, I’ve withstood a lot of hard times, and I’m still standing, too. But I find myself leaning to one side from time to time, so I like to ask the Lord to prop me up on my leaning side.

“I figure a lot of us get to leaning at times. Sometimes we get to leaning toward anger, leaning toward bitterness, leaning toward hatred, leaning toward cussing, leaning toward a lot of things that we shouldn’t. So we need to pray, ‘Lord, prop us up on our leaning side, so we will stand straight and tall again to glorify You.”’

We need You, Lord, to give us the strength to stand whenever we get out of balance. In those times, “Lord, prop us up on our leaning side.”

Blessed be the Lord, who daily loadeth us with benefits, even the God of our salvation.

It was a stressful day, and as it ended the weather forecaster was announcing a severe storm warning for our area. I stepped out the back door of our house to look at the roses before the storm broke; I gasped when I saw the sky. It was still perfectly clear directly above me, but in the distance dark clouds rolled across the sky with a rainbow perfectly woven through them. It was almost overwhelming.

With that as my backdrop, I walked through the yard taking in the beauty of the abundant blooms on the roses, while the gentle breeze lifted their fragrance through the air. And if these blessings weren’t enough, my phone rang and the voice of a good friend brought words of cheer.

As I sat on the bench talking with my friend, a tiny rabbit hopped through the grass, several birds fluttered about, and I felt the breeze of a perfect summer evening. My soul was refreshed by the little reminders of God’s greatness, the beauty of the things right outside my backdoor, and the thought that tomorrow will be another day—and there will be more blessings from a Father who delights in delighting us!

Blessed Lord, thank You for the little things that brighten each day.

ISAIAH 26:3 (NKJV)
You will keep him in perfect peace,
Whose mind is stayed on You,
Because he trusts in You.

The bulletin cover at church on Sunday pictured an old mill at rest with a lone white swan floating on the perfectly still pond. The sky was blue and the grass, trees and shrubs framing the scene were brilliantly green. The caption read “PERFECT PEACE.” Underneath were the words of Isaiah 26:3. Indeed it was the picture of complete peace.

On Tuesday morning, I faced a major disappointment but as I opened my book to lead our Bible study shortly after that, the first passage I had marked to read was Isaiah 26:3. How good of my loving Father to remind me again of His ability to calm my storm and soothe my aching soul.

Over and over again in our current study we’ve seen that true peace comes as we seek God’s voice, listen carefully to what He says, and then obey His commands. Samuel, King Hezekiah, Thomas, and Luke are examples of men who found peace when they steadfastly focused their hearts and minds on Him.

Its interesting, isn’t it, how the Lord uses His Word to get us through tough times? It amazed my that day how often the words “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee,” came to my mind along with Hebrews 12:2 that says, “Fix your eyes on Jesus . . .” Yes, true peace comes as I focus on my God and Savior, not on the people and problems around me. He is my Anchor!

Loving Father, giver of peace, I praise You for Your faithfulness always. Truly You are the God of all might and power—able to calm the storms on the sea, and quiet the raging waves in our lives. Blessed be Your holy name!

P.S. When I finished writing this devotional, I shut down my computer and hopped into my car to go to work. As soon as I turned on the engine, the CD voices softly whispered the words “Peace! Peace! Wonderful peace, Coming down from the Father above; Sweep over my spirit forever, I pray, In fathomless billows of love.” Even there God whispered His words of peace to my heart. I was astounded and humbled at His care.
