A Light for My Path Devotional

Winter Wonderland

ISAIAH 61:1, 3
The Lord has anointed Me
To preach good tidings to the poor . . .
To proclaim liberty to the captives . . .
To give them beauty for ashes,
The oil of joy for mourning,
The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness.

This week it was both my joy and privilege to be a part of the Winter Get-Together for the staff of Child Evangelism Fellowship of Eastern Pennsylvania. It meant driving about 75 miles to arrive at the camp where the meetings were held. I anticipated a long, boring, dreary trip because of the January bleakness that drapes the Pennsylvania landscape this time of year.

Much to my surprise, though, the first thing I noticed as I got in my car was the beautiful blue sky with morning sunlight brightening the horizon. That felt nice after the extremely cold, depressing days we’ve just experienced.

The sunshine outside and the praise music streaming from the new CD I received for Christmas warmed my heart and soul. I began to notice more and more beauty as I traveled.

The sun glistened on the snow-covered frozen waters of the Susquehanna River as mile after mile we traveled side by side. Massive frozen waterfalls lined the mountain on my right, while ice formations on the hills ahead created a sense of awe and beauty. The heaviness of winter was transformed into a virtual wonderland. Ah, the fascination of God’s creation!

The most beautiful part of the day, though, was seeing warm, friendly faces when I arrived at my destination. Just being among my brothers and sister in Christ felt good. Hearing an enthusiastic demonstration of a Bible lesson presented by a young director, and seeing other young faces, was evidence that the baton of truth is being passed on to another generation. What a thrill to know that, although technology is changing our world and the way we do things, this group has not altered their stand on the Word of the God and its power to change lives. His truth is marching on.

As I traveled homeward that afternoon, I realized just what a beautiful day it was, and I thanked God that the long, boring, dreary trip I anticipated was changed into a delightful journey.

Prayer: Wonderful Creator, when I’m tempted to let the ashes of mourning and a spirit of heaviness shroud my day, open my eyes to the beauty and joy You place all around me. Let my eyes see the greatness of Your creation, and observe Your hand at work in the lives of others. Let my lips praise Your name.
