The Fight of Faith – Part 2

The battle is the Lord’s.

When young David bravely stood face to face against Goliath, the lad’s confidence and courage amazed all who witnessed the scene. The 9-foot Philistine giant towered over the young man, yet David boldly proclaimed to his enemy, “The battle is the Lord’s and He will give you into our hands.” There was not a doubt in his mind as to who would win that fight!

Was this the foolish voice of youthful arrogance? How could David be so certain of the outcome? What was the secret of his strength and courage?

David knew well the power of the Lord for he had experienced God’s strength working in and through him many times before. He also knew God’s promises and was keenly aware of His presence. David leaned solely on the truth of God’s words, “My presence will go with you,” . . . “Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

As believers in the 21st century, the giants we face on a day to day basis are quite different, yet often they threaten to overwhelm and destroy us. Still we can have the same confidence that motivated David to fight valiantly and to win the victory.

The words of Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834–1892) remind us that we have the same power working within us:

The sacramental host of God’s elect is warring still on earth, Jesus Christ being the Captain of their salvation. He has said, “Lo! I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” Hark to the shouts of war! . . . The Saviour is, by his Spirit, still on earth; let this cheer us. He is ever in the midst of the fight, and therefore the battle is not doubtful. And as the conflict rages, what a sweet satisfaction it is to know that the Lord Jesus, in his office as our great Intercessor, is prevalently pleading for his people! O anxious gazer, look not so much at the battle below, for there thou shalt be enshrouded in smoke, and amazed with garments rolled in blood; but lift thine eyes yonder where the Saviour lives and pleads, for while he intercedes, the cause of God is safe. Let us fight as if it all depended upon us, but let us look up and know that all depends upon him . . . Onward! “for the battle is not yours but God’s.”

Prayer: Lord, sometimes the battles we fight daily here on earth seem hopeless. Help us remember always that You are constantly in us and around us and that we need not fear. Truly, the battle is Yours and we can be confident of that as we trust and obey Your direction.

Words to Ponder:
“Stand up, stand up for Jesus,
Stand in His strength alone;
The arm of flesh will fail you—
You dare not trust your own;
Put on the gospel armor,
Each piece put on with prayer;
Where duty calls, or danger,
Be never wanting there.”

–George Duffield, 1818-1888
