A Light for My Path Devotional

Staying Connected

JOHN 15:5 (NKJV)
I am the vine, you are the branches.  He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.

The plumber was helpful when he moved our thermostat from one room to the other this week.  I left a note so that the first person in the office the next morning would know about the change, but my dear co-worker didn’t see my note.  She went to the old thermostat, set it to the normal temperature and went about her work, but the temperature in the building didn’t warm up.  Nothing changed.  She didn’t realize that thermostat was no longer connected to the furnace.  It was totally disconnected.  It had no power, no means of accomplishing what it was designed to do.  What a vivid reminder of our need as believers to stay connected to our Source of power!

The beautiful image of the branch being connected to the vine that Jesus spoke of in John 15 clearly describes our need to stay connected to the Lord Jesus Christ Himself.  The point of connection between the vine and the branch is the place from which the branch draws all that is necessary to sustain life and produce fruit.  Without that, the branch can do nothing.

Darlene Marie Wilkinson in Secrets of the Vine for Women puts it this way, “. . . the greater the connection between branch and vine, the more lifeblood is available to produce fruit.”  “The size of this meeting place reveals the potential size of the harvest to come.  The harvest cannot be greater than this union allows.  It would be impossible.”

The new year is always a time of new beginnings.  We renew our commitments to accomplish certain things, make new plans, and set new goals. We start off with the best of intentions but what happens?  We get busy, lose interest, get distracted, or run out of steam.  Most of the time, it’s because we try to do things in our own strength.  At the start of this new year, don’t’ make a commitment to do more for the Lord, instead make it a priority to connect more with Him.  Spend time alone with Him, get to know Him, praise and worship Him, and become aware of His constant presence in your life so your connection with Him grows.

Father, there’s so much I want to do and be in this new year.  Keep me ever mindful of my need to draw strength and wisdom for all of it from You.
