A Light for My Path Devotional

Search Me, O God – Part II

PSALM 139:23-24 (NKJV)
Search me, O God, and know my heart;
Try me, and know my anxieties;
And see if there is any wicked way in me,
And lead me in the way everlasting.

Harboring sin in your life can drain you of your spiritual vigor and vitality, but often it creeps in so subtly that you aren’t even aware of what is happening. Before you know it, your heart and mind turn away from the Lord and toward another person, object, or activity in times of hurt, stress, or anxiety.

Susanna Wesley, mother of well-known preachers and authors Charles and John Wesley, put it this way: “Whatever weakens your reason, impairs the tenderness of your conscience, obscures your sense of God, or takes off the relish for spiritual things, then it is sin for you, however innocent it may be in itself.”

Yes, something seemingly innocent may eventually enslave you if you turn to that for comfort and relief instead of running to the Lord. That’s a bad choice. Bad choices turn into bad habits, and bad habits turn into a hurtful, sinful way of life. If an insecurity leads you down any path, other than the path to Jesus, it’s leading you the wrong direction! You need to look to Him and Him alone for strength, wisdom, healing, comfort, courage, and direction.

Remember the words of Psalm 139:23-24: “Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; And see if there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting.” Pray this little prayer daily, asking the Lord to show you any area of anxiety in your life. Let Him open your eyes to any sinful or inappropriate habit you lean on to cope with these fears and insecurities. Let this simple little prayer become your daily diagnostic exam. It will keep you from being enslaved to the lust of the flesh the lust of the eyes and the pride of life.

Lord Jesus, search my heart and show me what needs to be removed from my thoughts, my desires, and my life. Please heal my hurts and cleanse me from my sin.
