A Light for My Path Devotional

Really Blessed

HEBREWS 12:28 (The Message)
Do you see what we’ve got? An unshakable kingdom!  And do you see how thankful we must be? Not only thankful, but brimming with worship, deeply reverent before God.

What a surprise when I greeted the receptionist at the chiropractor’s office with “Hi, how are you?” and instead of getting the usual “Fine” that we hear from folks, I heard, “I’m blessed—big time!”  Then she continued, “You know how people always say, ‘It’s just one thing after another?’  Well, it really is.  It’s just one blessing after another!”

You’d think this lady had a perfect life, that the economy was miraculously fixed, that natural disasters weren’t occurring around the world, and that life was totally care free. Obviously that’s not the case, but rather than focusing on the negatives and the hard things, she makes a conscious choice to remember that as a child of God, she is part of God’s “unshakable kingdom” and to praise Him for His bountiful blessings–big and small.

In those brief moments we chatted about the goodness of God and His faithfulness, and right there in the doctor’s office, we were able to worship and praise our Heavenly Father.  It doesn’t take attending a church service or sitting quietly in mediation to worship Him.  When the heart is brimming over with thankfulness, praise and worship just naturally occur.  Even if it isn’t spoken out loud, God hears our heart of gratitude and receives our worship.

Gracious Father, You bless us anew each day.  Help us to be constantly aware of Your goodness and the beauty You place around us, and let our hearts continually overflow with Your praise.

For the Beauty of the Earth

For the beauty of the earth,
For the glory of the skies,
For the love which from our birth
Over and around us lies.
Lord of all, to Thee we raise
This our hymn of grateful praise.

For the beauty of each hour,
Of the day and of the night,
Hill and vale, and tree and flower,
Sun and moon, and stars of light,
Lord of all, to Thee we raise
This our hymn of grateful praise.

For the joy of ear and eye,
For the heart and mind’s delight,
For the mystic harmony
Linking sense to sound and sight,
Lord of all, to Thee we raise
This our hymn of grateful praise.

For the joy of human love,
Brother, sister, parent, child,
Friends on earth and friends above,
For all gentle thoughts and mild,
Lord of all, to Thee we raise
This our hymn of grateful praise.

For Thy Church, that evermore
Lifteth holy hands above,
Offering up on every shore
Her pure sacrifice of love.
Lord of all, to Thee we raise
This our hymn of grateful praise.
