A Light for My Path Devotional

Blessed Be the Name, Part 1

PSALM 103:3 (NKJV)
Bless the LORD, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless His holy name!

This morning there’s a song running through my mind over and over again. It’s a pleasant melody that I heard on a new CD yesterday, but it stirred up memories from my childhood. I can see myself standing behind a row of wooden theatre type seats in the sanctuary of the little church where my family worshiped. Next to me is my mother, and my father is next to her. Happy voices of the congregation blend to give up a “joyful noise” as we sing, “His name shall be the Counselor, the mighty Prince of Peace . . . Blessed by the name of the Lord.” Are you familiar with the words of this old hymn?

BLESSED BE THE NAME

All praise to Him Who reigns above
In majesty supreme,
Who gave His Son for man to die,
That He might man redeem!

Refrain:
Blessèd be the Name! Blessèd be the Name!
Blessèd be the Name of the Lord!
Blessèd be the Name! Blessèd be the Name!
Blessèd be the Name of the Lord!

His Name above all names shall stand,
Exalted more and more,
At God the Father’s own right hand,
Where angel hosts adore.

Refrain

Redeemer, Savior, Friend of man
Once ruined by the fall,
Thou hast devised salvation’s plan,
For Thou hast died for all.

Refrain

His Name shall be the Counselor,
The mighty Prince of Peace,
Of all earth’s kingdoms Conqueror,
Whose reign shall never cease.

Blessèd be the Name! Blessèd be the Name!
Blessèd be the Name of the Lord!
Blessèd be the Name! Blessèd be the Name!
Blessèd be the Name of the Lord!

–W.H. Clark, 19th Century
Refrain, Ralph E. Hudson, 1843-1901

In addition to the old hymns, many of the more contemporary choruses exalt the name of the Lord God Almighty. When you have a rough day, or are feeling down in the dumps, find a song that praises the Lord and start singing! It can stir your soul and lift your spirits to a place of joy and happiness even in the midst of tragedy.

PRAYER: Truly, Lord, Your name is above every name for You are God and You are good—all the time!

WORDS TO PONDER: “We can experience God in fresh ways by encountering His names and titles in the Scriptures and by learning about the biblical and cultural context in which these were revealed.”
–Ann Spangler, author of  The Names of God
